Job Title: Senior Hospital Play Specialist
Accountable to: Play Service Manager
Responsible to: Team Leader/Play Co-ordinator
Grade: Senior I Hospital Play Specialist
Liaises with: - Multidisciplinary team
JOB SUMMARY
·
To manage a caseload of children with complex needs, using evidence based practice to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.·
To provide leadership for junior staff through clinical supervision.·
To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of play services within a designated area/team, holding responsibility for defined projects.·
To contribute to the maintenance and development of the play service throughout the Trust.·
To regularly supervise HPS and nurse students on practice placement.

Clinical
|
· To select and apply therapeutic techniques to help children and young people overcome complex difficulties with hospital admissions/procedures.· To apply therapeutic techniques and be involved in the care planning for children and young people with long term chronic illness.· To manage a caseload of children with complex needs.· To plan and implement interventions to achieve therapeutic goals, in collaboration with the referrer, the child and family.
· To monitor, evaluate and modify therapeutic interventions in order to measure child’s progress and ensure effectiveness of care plan.· To apply a high level of understanding of the psychological effects of hospitalisation and long term chronic illness, providing training and advice to members of the multidisciplinary team.· To use specialised knowledge to provide advice and support to children and families under stress and in crisis. |

|
· To establish effective communication, both verbal and written, with all members of the multidisciplinary team in child health and in other departments of the hospital where the children are treated.· To have an awareness of the referral pathway.· To establish communication links with other agencies/hospitals involved with the child. |

Documentation |
· To ensure that up to date written records and activity data are maintained in accordance with Professional and Trust standards and provide specialist written reports relevant to the child’s care plan. |

· To work within the Trust’s clinical governance and quality agenda, and to monitor practice standards.· To apply NAHPS Guidelines for Professional Practice and legislation relating to health and social care. |

TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS | Level 4 Diploma in Specialised Play for Sick
Children and Young People/Edexcel Certificate in Hospital Play Specialism or
HPSC/HPSEB. Training in child protection issues.

EXPERIENCE | Documented evidence of Continuing Professional Development 3 years post qualifying experience as a Hospital Play Specialist. Experience of audit procedures. |
Post registration experience in a range of clinical

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS | Specialist knowledge and application of
therapeutic assessments and interventions relevant to patient group and
treatment plan.
