Job Title: Senior Hospital Play Specialist

Accountable to: Play Service Manager

Responsible to: Team Leader/Play coordinator

Grade: Senior II Hospital Play Specialist.

Liaises with: - Multidisciplinary team.

JOB SUMMARY

· To take on individual referrals for children experiencing difficulty in managing hospital admission/procedures, using evidence based practice to assess, plan, implement and evaluate therapeutic interventions.

· To supervise Hospital Play Specialist students on placement.

· To provide leadership for junior staff, as delegated by supervisor.

Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical/

Therapeutic

 

· To select and apply therapeutic techniques to help children and young people overcome difficulties with hospital admission/procedures.

· To plan and implement interventions to achieve therapeutic goals, in collaboration with the referrer, the child and their family.

· To use knowledge and understanding of child developmental to contribute to assessments and overall, long term care planning.

· To monitor, evaluate and modify therapeutic interventions in order to measure child’s progress and ensure effectiveness of care plan.

· To demonstrate and apply knowledge of the effect of hospitalisation and illness on the child/family when contributing to care pathways.

· To support children and families under stress and in crisis.

Communication

 

 

· To establish effective communication, both verbal and written, with all members of the multidisciplinary team in child health and in other departments of the hospital where children are treated.

Documentation

· To ensure that up to date written records and activity data are maintained in accordance with Professional and Trust standards.

Professional ethics

· To comply with the NAHPS Code of Professional Conduct and Trust policies.

· To respect the individuality, values, cultural and religious diversity of patients and their families, and contribute to the provision of a service sensitive to these needs.

· To demonstrate the ability to reflect on ethical issues and to provide guidance to junior staff as necessary.

Leadership, supervision & appraisal

· To undertake the supervision of junior staff as delegated by a senior member of staff.

· To demonstrate basic leadership skills through the management of designated projects.

Training staff & students

· To participate in the planning and implementation of the training/education of students and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

· To be responsible for the supervision and written assessment of HPS/nursing students on placement.

Service development & delivery

· To participate in the planning, evaluation and audit of practice, care pathways and protocols.

· To be proactive in the delivery of the play service development plan.

Professional development

 

· To apply enhanced knowledge and skills in order to establish and maintain professional competence.

· To maintain a professional portfolio in line with HPSET recommendations for re-registration, recording learning outcomes from participation in internal and external development opportunities.

· To demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of current research and best practice.

Personal Development

· To review and reflect on own practice and performance through effective use of clinical supervision and appraisal.

Clinical governance, quality, standards

· To work within the Trust’s Clinical governance and quality agenda.

· To demonstrate and apply an understanding of the NAHPS Guidelines for Professional Practice and legislation relating to health and social care.

· To prioritise own caseload in accordance with the individual/service needs.

· To co-ordinate the day-to-day activities of junior staff where applicable.

Responsibility for resources

· To be responsible for maintaining stock, advising on resources to meet the needs of the service area.

Research and practice development.

TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS Level 4 Diploma in Specialised Play for Children and Young People/Edexcel Certificate in Hospital Play Specialism or HPSC/HPSEB.

Training in child protection.

Documented evidence of Continuing Professional Development

Professional Portfolio

EXPERIENCE  

2 years post qualifying experience as a Hospital Play Specialist.

Post registration experience in a relevant clinical setting

Experience of supporting junior staff and/or students

CV

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Broad knowledge of current best practice.

Knowledge of and ability to apply therapeutic interventions for children experiencing difficulties with hospitalisation, treatment and chronic illness.
